At the September Atlanta Regional Housing Forum, the Atlanta Regional Commission unveiled its new housing strategy for the region, outlining the challenges facing metro Atlanta and the need for coordinated action across jurisdictions, sectors, and communities. In December, we’ll move from the regional picture to a closer look at how one of metro Atlanta’s largest counties is building out its own housing strategy.
DeKalb County has emerged as one of the region’s most active local governments on housing policy, creating a dedicated housing fund, establishing an Office of Housing and Chief Housing Officer, developing its first comprehensive housing plan, and approving a $155 million Housing Investment Bond Program to support housing production, preservation, homeownership and neighborhood revitalization. An active DeKalb Housing Roundtable, convened by HouseATL and the Coalition for a Diverse DeKalb, has also informed and supported that work, bringing together housing providers, advocates, developers, residents, businesses, and government around shared priorities and implementation.
At the December 2 Atlanta Regional Housing Forum, we’ll begin with DeKalb County CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson, who will share her broader vision for the County and the role housing plays in reimagining local government. Chief Housing Officer Dr. Alan Ferguson will then provide an overview of the many housing initiatives underway or in development, including new funding tools, preservation and homeownership strategies, neighborhood revitalization efforts, and plans to address housing instability.
The program will also feature a panel discussion focused on DeKalb’s evolving approach to housing instability, including homelessness and the broader challenges that can place individuals and families at risk of losing stable housing.
And as we close out the year and look ahead to the 2027 Georgia General Assembly, we’ll reserve time for a legislative update on housing-related issues likely to be part of the conversation under the Gold Dome.
Join us for a timely look at how one of metro Atlanta’s largest counties is working to build a more coordinated housing strategy, and what those efforts may mean for the region as a whole.
We will continue to offer a remote viewing option via Zoom. When your schedule allows, we hope you'll join us in person—the informal conversations and networking before and after the program are often among the most valuable parts of the Forum.
